The NHL will play an outdoor game at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. According to the Associated Press, the Washington Capitals will host the Toronto Maple Leaf on March 3 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
The league has featured outdoor games during their popular Stadium Series that features the Heritage Classic and Winter Classic. This will be the first regular season game at a U.S. service academy. An announcement for the event is expected on Monday prior to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, according to NHL Network.
The stadium is home to the Navy Midshipmen football team and has a capacity of 34,000 for football games. It is also the host for the Military Bowl.
This will be the third outdoor game for both the Capitals and Maple Leafs and the first in the D.C. Area since the Capitals hosted the Winter Classic in 2015.
The NHL will have at least three outdoor games next season, including the Capitals-Maple Leafs. The Ottawa Senators will host the Montreal Canadiens in the Heritage Classic on Dec. 19, and the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres will play in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Citi Field in New York.
