Nicklas Backstrom scores equalizer in third to send Caps-Leafs into OT

The Washington Capitals were just over seven minutes away from losing Game 2 of their first-round NHL playoff series with the Toronto Maple Leafs on their home ice. However, in dramatic fashion the maestro of the Capitals Nicklas Backstrom struck gold with the game-tying goal with 7:21 remaining in the third period.

Backstrom’s goal was a byproduct of a great shift by the Capitals top line. The line was relentless as Backstrom missed on two shots and Alex Ovechkin got a shot on goal. But after Toronto was unable to clear the zone, Backstrom got the feed from Dmitry Orlov before depositing the equalizer in the net.

Thus, both teams are headed into overtime for the second straight game of the series.
