Virginia Tech stunned No. 12 Virginia in a double overtime thriller, 80-78. Hokies guard Seth Allen drained the go-ahead bucket with 3.2 seconds remaining.
Allen, who finished with a team-high 20 points drove to the lane and created spacing from Marial Shayok with a pump-fake to get off the shot. A desperation heave from London Perrantes, who had a game-high 22 points, was off, handing Virginia Tech the upset win. Virginia Tech fans in the packed Cassell Coliseum stormed the court in jubilation.
Virginia Tech trailed by 14 at halftime and battled back to send the game into overtime. The Cavaliers had a chance to right the ship, but unbelievable bounce of the ball on a Perrantes layup attempt in overtime helped send the game into double OT. The Hokies improved to 17-7 and 6-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. It’s a big win for them, their second straight over Virginia in Blacksburg. Buzz Williams’ team has now signature wins over Duke, Virginia, and quality wins over Michigan, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse.
Virginia falls to 18-6 and 8-5 in the ACC. They have now loss three straight on the road. They have lost those three games by a combined total of eight points.
