Virginia senior wide receiver T.J. Thorpe was bit overzealous about hauling in a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Johns versus Boise State — his first since transferring from North Carolina to UVA in the spring. Thorpe bust some dance moves a bit too much for the officials liking, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. His actions came at a bad time, considering the Cavaliers were down 17-0 to the Broncos prior to Thorpe’s score.
His penalty also push Virginia back 15 yards for the ensuing extra point. Luckily for him, they got the point to make the score 17-7.
But, considering the kid has struggled with injuries throughout his career including suffering a broken clavicle in the summer, you may be able to understand his excitement in scoring.
Thorpe ran an eight-route on the weak side of the formation. Johns delivered a perfect pass with the Boise State pass rush barreling on top of him. Thorpe did the rest, evading three defenders and strolling down the sidelines for the touchdown.
Unfortunately, that was the best pass of the night for Johns and the negatives were far more often than not, as Boise State steamrolled the Cavaliers 56-14.
