Expect the unexpected during a Stadium Series contest. Saturday’s clash between the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs at the U.S. Naval Academy had it all. Gold medalists U.S. Curling and U.S. Women’s Hockey teams enjoyed the festivities. The Capitals did too, scoring five goals through the first two periods. However, all the excitement may have been too much for the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium’s lights.

The stadium had a black out during the television timeout at the 10-minute mark of the third period. Designed to allow the teams to switch ends of each period during Stadium Series games, the lights at the Annapolis, Md. stadium went out.
As music played over the stadium during the impromptu timeout, the eager fans in attendance had a little fun with the darkness. As thousands turned on their smartphone’s lights to keep a glow the stadium.

The lights eventually came back on to finish the contest. It was just the icing on the cap for a extraordinary night.
